Differences between the styles

Inspired by the exquisite details of French design, the furniture created in this course will be crafted in the Louis XV and XVI styles.Discover how to identify these furniture styles.

Louis xiv

Louis XIV Style (1643–1715): Characterized by grandeur and opulence, Louis XIV furniture often features bold, dramatic forms with heavy ornamentation. Elements such as intricate carvings, gilding, and rich fabrics are prevalent. The style emphasizes symmetry and is heavily influenced by the Baroque movement, showcasing a sense of power and authority.

Louis xv

Louis XV Style (1715–1774): Transitioning from the grandeur of Louis XIV, the Louis XV style introduced more fluid and organic forms. Curved lines, asymmetry, and playful motifs define this style, reflecting the Rococo movement. The furniture often features intricate floral designs and elaborate carvings, emphasizing comfort and elegance over formality.

louis xvi

Louis XVI Style (1774–1792): In contrast to the previous styles, Louis XVI furniture returns to classical simplicity and symmetry. The emphasis on straight lines, geometric shapes, and classical motifs marks a departure from the ornate and curvilinear forms of Louis XV. This style reflects a more rational and restrained approach to design, aligning with the Enlightenment ideals of the time.
