WHAT IS A STATE BED?
State bedrooms were a fashionable addition to rich country houses in the 18th century despite often being infrequently used. They were reserved only for very important visitors. At Harewood house the State Bed was used by two very famous guest, Queen Victoria in 1835 and the Grand Duke and later Zar Nicholas II of Russia in 1916.
